Playing with Motionbased

The possibilities are endless, and I wish there was more time in the day. Last night while uploading my activities, I found myself browsing/surfing the Trailnetwork to see who has set the fastest pace for the local mtb loop in my neighborhood and that was just one of many things I could check out but didn't have enough time for. It's an incredibly powerful application/tool which I am still becoming familiar with. This morning I decided to focus my efforts and do a rather simple analysis of my progress this year compared to last year. Here's how I did it, and what I found out: In the Digest page, I clicked on Reports on the left side of the page. I chose Activity type, underneath the Reports column, and a report appeared in the center of the page, sorting my info by activity type. Then I checked the box next to Mountain Biking, and then clicked Add Filter, this narrowed down my stats, and then I chose event Event Type on the left, which gave me a report sorting my Mountain Biking activities by event (recreation, race, training, transportation, etc). Then I checked the box next to race, clicked on Add Filter. Then I got a report with my race only stats. Finally, I wanted to see how I fared this season versus last season so I clicked on Distribute By: Year on the left side of the page, and got my ultimate report: My overall speed went up from 9.7 to 10.4. Although I only competed in 33% more events this year, they were more difficult races in 2006: with over twice the distance and elevation logged for 2005. So it looks like I'm going faster on even harder courses - Yay! I am improving! Next I'll do a report like this to help analyze my training progress. By the way, I took a look at the trail network to see who posted the fastest lap at Tamarancho.  There are lots of activities associated with that trail in particular and a range of total distances.  Perhaps there is a need for a standard: the loop from the top of Alchemist?  Anyhow it seems that an average speed of 9 to 11 mph is the going rate for the fastest laps.  Right now I'm at 9.3 mph for my standard loop.  Olivier tells me he's done a 35:20, but in the context of a longer ride.  But that's the beauty of Motionbased; it helps you establish patterns and see your progress, chart your hours, elevation, miles, etc. so you can go back and see just what you have done, and then compare it to yourself or to others.
