"Oregon trails hold you; California ones throw you away." Well, we were in Washington today and the same thing is true. The trails up here in the Pacific Northwest are bermed, tacky duff that is so rippable that new limits of speed and cornering must be learned. This in contrast to the off-camber, loose-over-hard conditions dominant in California and I can only say that we are going to get spoiled here. Hopefully we don't lose our ability to ride the "Sketch."
At least we still have climbing. Winter time is Grom Time: no better time to get back to kid-instinct riding, practicing wheelies and jumps and fun stuff, away from the focus of racing. Good news is that it's good for racing too.
The Nestor Peak ride is one helluva climb that takes you up to some wonder viewpoints (note: today's view was "cloudy"). The overcast conditions were actually somewhat warm, and the temperatures were moderated by chilly winds and mists. I loved it, but we'll see what winter has in store.
So back to idea of Gromming. I really want a new bike (as always). Right now my wish list includes a Santa Cruz Heckler, with a new Lyric fork. Bomber for drops, not too heavy, maybe the perfect Super-D bike.
Oh, for more on Grom, and more than I knew anyway (I was referring to the "young surfer" definition) - checkit : Grom, Gromit, Young Grommit.
