Clark announced that he was registered for a trail running race the Saturday morning of a weekend when my parents and my husband and I were going to be visiting. As his little sister who loves the outdoors as much as he does, and has had a habit of trying to keep up with him out there, it was only natural that I'd want to enter into the race as well. Although I had only been trail running occasionally since the mtb racing season wrapped up, I thought I'd still give it a shot, because I just love races in general. Here's why: they hurt - but you're in good company; you get a good rush - whether it's speed, competition, or sheer exhilaration of pushing your body to the limits; you get to 'bond' with other racers after or during the suffer-fest; and you are always entitled to eat a lot of ice cream afterwards. Thank goodness the easy going and fun-loving folks of Envirosports had a 7 mile race option to the Marathon and 25K. Seven miles was going to be the longest distance for me yet this year. Clark had an extra Forerunner 305 for me to use, and we warmed up by drinking lots of water and standing around (and jogging a little bit). The route was going up Steep Ravine, across Pantoll, and onto Matt Davis and down.
