Peavine XC

An alleged lightning strike ended the Peavine XC a bit early this year, but otherwise things were pretty normal in Reno, NV. "Rocky, dry, and loose: classic Peavine conditions", says Kenny Burt, Jamis/Motionbased racer who also took second in the Pro field on that day.
The race started with Kyle Dixon and Scott Fifield, two of Reno's MTB hardmen, laying down a hard pace and leaving behind everybody but Kenny and Dave (of Team MB fame).
"For the whole climb I was tickling my maximum heart around 185-193! I averaged 180 including decending", Kenny added. "We found out about the shorted race with about ten minutes of the track left. So i think everyone just pinned it to try and catch who they could and that's when Dave flatted in a rock garden. With the shorter course there was not enough time to come back. I guess we all ended that day wanting a little more , but with the hot weather there were others who were pretty happy."
So it still isn't clear how that fire started, but at least some good speed work was gained in the bargain. Peavine is known as one of the most challenging races in Nevada, the climbs are long and hot and there is no shade. The loose, off-camber descents favor local knowledge and punish those who take the wrong lines.
